More than 714,000 women and girls are held in penal institutions throughout the world, according to the fourth edition of the World Female Imprisonment List, researched and compiled by Roy Walmsley and published by the Institute for Criminal Policy Research at Birkbeck, University of London.
On Thursday, 9 November, ICPR will launch the fourth edition of the World Female Imprisonment List, providing a comprehensive account of the numbers of women and girls in prison across the world. With female prisoner numbers rising at a much greater rate than the male equivalent since 2000, the event is an important opportunity to consider some of the key causes and consequences of this worrying trend.
