On 8 and 9 November 2018, ICPR welcomed speakers from Brazil, America, Thailand, Australia, the Netherlands and the UK to share their expertise on prison health. The event was attended by UK and overseas researchers; NGOs working in the fields of penal reform, prisoner support, drug law reform and harm reduction; and staff from prisons inspectorates, monitoring boards and international agencies working in detention.
Mapping inequalities in prisoner healthcare worldwide was funded by the Wellcome Trust/Birkbeck Institutional Strategic Support Fund. The full programme can be accessed here. Several of the speakers are collaborating with ICPR on its current project, ‘Understanding and reducing the use of imprisonment in ten countries’. The project’s first publication can be accessed here; a report on prison health in the ten countries is planned for Spring 2019.
