ICPS meeting with Chinese Vice Minister

On Wednesday 21 May, Peter Bennett, Director of ICPS, and Mike Newell, Associate, were invited to the UK Ministry of Justice, National Offender Management Service, to meet a high-level delegation from the Peoples’ Republic of China led by the Vice Minister, Zhang Sujun, and accompanied by senior officials from the Bureau of Prison Administration.

Peter Bennett addressed the delegation and explained the objectives and work of ICPS in disseminating knowledge, principles and good practice on prison reform. Mike Newell followed with a presentation of ICPS’ involvement in prison reform work in China since 2005, including his personal observations and experiences arising from his visits to some forty prisons. A final discussion focused on the Vice Minister’s interest in the treatment of prisoners in UK prisons.
