For a number of years the Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales has used a document called Expectations as a reference point for the standards which the Inspectorate expects to find when it inspects prisons. In 2003 the Chief Inspector decided to update this document and to include primary references for each expectation to international human rights standards. ICPS was happy to carry out this referencing work for the Inspectorate for this and subseqent editions of Expectations.
To date, ICPS has provided references for the standards relating to adult prisoners, to children and young people, to those held in immigration detention and to those held in police custody. Links to these documents can be found below.
